Determined to optimise its energy consumption, Hôtel & Ryads Barrière Le Naoura Marrakech has developed an innovative solution: installing a biomass boiler fuelled by olive stones.
Designed in partnership with AVEO Energie, the concept, the first of its kind in the country, was awarded the Moroccan Sustainable Tourism Award in January 2016. This prize demonstrates the Barrière's commitment to protecting the environment, reducing energy consumption and promoting sustainable construction.
Reduced energy costs
Why not use broken-up olive stones to fuel a biomass boiler? A Barrière employee came up with the idea in December 2013 and was rewarded for their involvement with an Innovation Star, an award presented each year to those individuals best representing our good practices.
After being installed in September 2014, the equipment has meant that the establishment has consumed six times less gas over two years, decreasing from 166 to 27 tonnes. This programme has also prevented 400 tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) from being released into the atmosphere each year. Used to heat the water in the hotel, outdoor pool, aquatic centre and the spa, never has the hotel been more mindful of its energy use and its impact on the environment.
Committed to promoting responsible luxury, Le Naoura has also held the Clef Verte label since 2013. This distinction recognises the efforts of tourist accommodation establishments in terms of environmental protection.
